This is a lovely peaceful family campsite. We have been coming to this site with our children on and off for over 20 years. It is so popular with our family, that we all don't feel we've had a summer until we've stayed at Benar Beach. The site owner David is always welcoming, friendly and kind. We have recommended this site to friends because of its orderly manner and quiet location. We have always liked this campsite, and probably always will. If some campers don't like David's site management style, then I question their mentality, not David's! An absolute winner for die-hard campers with an A-star rating from me!

OK after reading the previous comments I think it`s only fair to add a balanced opinion on our experience there, after visiting quite a few times over the past couple of years. 1 ) the location is fantastic ,a few minutes walk from the beach in one direction and breathtaking views of the snowdonia mountains inland in the other.Duffryn spar and local sites /shops provide almost any taste of food needed for a short stay. there is a club house on a neighbouring site and a pub by the railway line at Duffryn .a great place if you like walking. If your driving, there are loads of places to visit and the Site owner has leaflets for most of them . 2)We found Benar Beach friendly, clean and well looked after, Unlike some previous comments The owner and staff were nothing short of helpful ,polite and relaxed with no pettyness .ok the showers are 50p for an unlimmited time but it is hot and clean .We know that you cannot please everybody all of the time but If you want the extras there is Duffryn Estates ,swimming pool/club,chip shop etc available but alot more costly . 3)NATURISM is allowed in one field ( not visible to non naturists )which I believe is about to be extended making the field larger and catering for naturist clubs etc.the field is surrounded by an eight ft tall stone wall and a great suntrap during the summer months ,having said that the wind does get strong on blowy nights towards the end of the season . There is another field localy for naturists but you have to stay behind windbreakers if naked (which we can do at home and seems pointless and not as sociable)so on balance Benar Beach seems to suit us better. There is a clean portaloo there and a water tap but no power supply at the moment. The naturist beach is aprox a three quarters of a mile walk by turning right at the beach and is well signposted. 4) Families have the choice of two fields, one with power supply and one without, All in all suitable for families couples ,great for naturists too.

I have been staying at Benar Beach, on and off, for the last 10 years, and have always found it a nice site. As a single male traveller I have frequently been discriminated against. But not at Benar Beach. As for the owner David. I have always got on well with him and am disappointed to see some of the personal attacks. Regarding emptying the contents of a portaloo into a wheelbarrow. Whoever suggested this is obviously unfamiliar with the way portaloos are designed and I consider the allegation to be completely without foundation. Portaloos are designed to be emptied and refilled using a sucker device. Only last week I saw the lorry coming round with the device mounted on the back - the toilets were emptied and then refilled with clean chemicals. It would not be possible to empty the contents into a wheelbarrow, and would in any case be a violation of the hire contract. As for the ban on flying kites. Benar Beach is on the approach to Llanbedr Airfield, which as a military airfield has been closed for the last few years, but there is talk of reopening it as an civilian airport. Bans on kite flying are normal in such situations and would be outwith the control of camp site owners. As for the showers. It is no different to the neighbouring sites in this regard. I agree the showers (that were operated by tokens) in the brick built toilet block are out of date. This is why they've been out of use for two years. However the ones in the portakabin are of good quality. When shower tokens were still on sale, I and most other campers preferred to use the new showers for the reasons that they were warmer and had no time limit. To conclude my comments, Benar Beach is a basic site but this is fairly reflected in the price. You can pay a pound a night less and stay on Dennis's field (a.k.a. Glyn's Field or Pentre Mawr Farm), and have to do your ablutions in the public loo because the only facilities provided are portaloos. Or you could pay a lot more and stay on the Dyffryn Seaside Estate, and they have time limited showers according to what I've been told.

Lets get the good points out of the way...Great location next to a beautiful beach.Right then, the bad points...starting with the MAIN.The owner David Powell Jones is very old school,pre-chalk and slate in fact.He tends to make you feel on edge with his constant nagging about...believe it or not..having a full rubbish bag outside of the awning. If the rubbish was all over the grass floor then rightly so,but when it is all contained in a black refuse sack waiting to be put in the skip (which is always rammed full by the way) then where is the problem???Just give me 5mins to do it David...IM ON BLOODY HOLIDAY!!! but thats the problem, you dont feel like you're on holiday as you,re bing constantly nagged by the man making it feel more like a prison camp.Another major point is his sterness towards children. He does not like them playing...they have no freedom whatso ever which is a great shame. He also accused two children of smashing?drinking vodka bottles behind the toilet blocks...the childrens ages?..7 and 11...GET REAL DAVID!!!.The man is 100% paranoid im sure. His temperament fluctuates more than his prices! how can you charge a family of 4 15 pounds a night and another family 25 a night.Robbery.This is why he will ask you on arrival if you have been before. If you answer yes he asks if you have one of his BENAR BEACH keyrings which he hands out to prove it!!!The mans insane! Do what you like people but i wont be going there again!

I know the location is great and the site is basic which i would cope with if David read a book called skills with people he should, limit his site to two couples per caravan or tent as he will not allow more than two adults per unit ,and he certainly does not like children he watches them like the evil child catcher waiting for them to breathe out of turn so he can have a go at them. I came home feeling more stressed than if i had been at work dont go there

We are just about to set off for Benar again next week and was trawling the reviews to see what people generally think. I am absolutely appauled at the disrespectful comments - particularly the personal attacks on David. We had a week there last year and loved every second of our visit. We had some roudy young people who pitched near our three family tents and David very rapidly sorted them out. Showers do cost 50p per person which equates to £4 a day for my lot, it does mount up but after a day playing in the dunes a hot and clean shower is welcome. We found the site picturesque and pleasant and would recommend it to all. There are boundaries to ensure the site meets most requrements but these are expalined upfront so there are no misconceptions! A fab place to go!

I have visited davids site on numerous occasions and found the prices do vary from one price to the next . He doesnt seem to have a proper pricing structure . He usually looks at what your wearing or which car your driving and makes the price up out of thin air. One occasion he was that unhelpfull that i pitched up in the field formally known as glyns field. The shower thing is very odd . The ones within the brick building are dirty and the temp is never regulated and its too short to feel like you had a decent shower whereas the porta cabin showers are not timed. The naturist section is quiet and ideal if you dont want kids running around. Dave needs to brush up on his people skills and be a bit more friendly because if he does not people will pay to go elsewhere .

in response to neilsons review August 2009, i wish people would learn to spell if they are to write a review!! Soft footballs are recommended as it prevents damage to vehicles and tents etc.. Ok its not a 5 star site but the ground is ideal for pitching and how many campsites are next to a beautiful beach. We've been a number of times and loved it.

My wife and I love this site , it is generally nice and quite . Really handy for the beach and lots of facilities nearby. Toilets and showers are ok , the only problem is David seems to vary his prices ,normaly £15 for caravan and 2 adults with electric , Whit Bank holiday was £20 , just got back after him wanting £25 , which far too dear , so paid £20 for non electric. It is putting us of going back. Also charged £2 a night to leave Caravan , found out he charges others £1.

for the past 2years ive been going to benar beach with my parents who are in there sixtys, i go up there to help my parents set up there caravan and put there awning up for them. and get every thing ready for them to have there yearly rest. i get told after going to the office where the owner misserable david sit most of the time in the same cloths he wears all week i will say. tells me after half aday helping my parents set up im not allowed to stay over nite, even though i said i'll pay for the nite. so i had a 2 hr drive home. thanks dave. a few days later i return with a tent only to find the feild was almost empty.so pitched tent opposite my parents tourer. which is great for my 2year old son who is obsest with them. as you do you play with the children because thats what the seaside is all about. wrong??????? if you stay at benar beach feild YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FLY A KITE ON AN EMPTY FEILD,PLAY WITH BALLS UNLESS THEY ARE SOFT BALLS. AND THE 1 THAT GETS ME YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RIDE BICYCLES ON THE SITE. WHICH REALLY PISSED ME OF BECAUSE THE OWNER RIDES AROUND ON HIS BIKE IN HIS SCABBY BLUE STRIPPED SWEATER. AND IVE ALSO WITNESSED HIM EMPTY THE PORTA LOO'S IN TO A WHEEL BARROW AND GO AND EMPTY IT BEHIND THE TOILET BLOKE,JUST TO SAVE A CALL OUT TO EMPTY THEM A DAY EARLY. AND HE STILL HAD THE SAME CLOTHS ON THE NEXT DAY AFTER EMPTYIN THE CRAPPER. PS I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO THE BENAR BEACH SITE AGAIN. COZ YOU ARENT ALLOWED TO DO ANYTHING WHEN YOU ARE THERE AND THE FACILITYS ARE VERY POOR AND UNCLEAN.

My partner and I have just returned from a visit to Benar Beach Campsite. We chose this site as we are naturists and it has a small section just for naturists. We have a tent and were charged £15 a night which is somewhat expensive. On the naturist field there is just 1 portaloo, nothing more. To have a shower you have to go to the main site and there are only 2 shower blocks for the entite campsite. There are no flush toilets at all just portaloos in a few areas of the site. The owner charges 50p for a shower which we thought a bit much in view of the rate charged. Also you have to take your 50p to him in his office to pay for the shower. We did want a shower at 7.15 in the morning but found he had locked the showers so had to wait untill he arrived to get one so no way does he want anyone to have a shower without paying the 50p. The site is certainly very pleasantly situated but spoiled by such basic facilties and the high rates for such basic facilities. So would not return.

This is an ideal site for those with a caravan who enjoy peace and quiet. For a family with a tent it is a bit more of a challenge. We found it frustrating to have to pay extra for the showers in addition to finding them locked on a number of occasions. The only sink apparently available for washing dishes is in the ladies (!) loos (rather unhygenic, I think) and there is a charge for hot water for this sink, too. People get round this by decanting hot water from the wash basins. The location is lovely but we have stayed on much better equipped, equally tranquil campsites in Cornwall.

This site is in a good location, however you need to be aware of the following, the facilities are not clean, the showeres were not open first thing and the campsite rules are not adhered to or managed. On arrival we were taken to an area by David and advised to pitch our tent there. It apears that he then pitched all the other families and groups in this area. Our children are young and the noise carried on until 2am Sunday morning!!! These were groups of people and certainly not family orientated. The site prices do vary we were quoted differently to what we paid on arrival. We have camped in many many locations and would not advise this site for more than a couple of nights unless you have a caravan. we will be reverting back to the Dyffryn Seaside estate where everyone appears to visit from this site, the pitches are well segregated and you can not fault the cleanliness of the toilets and showers.

myself, partner and daughter have been going to Davids field for the past 5 years. We always have a fantastic time, David is always happy to help, we store our caravan there over the summer months for a very good price. My daughter who is 9 always makes friends there easily, David does let the kids play games as lond as they are supervised by adults, we have had bbq's there outside the caravan. the people there are alwyas plesent and polite. Iwould recomend this site to all family's. The beach just 5 mins walk away is the best, its better than most beaches abroad.

Well in response to JONES review.... I LOVE this campsite, in fact it is the best one around for kids!!!! My boyfriends friend hold a martial arts camp every year here and David the owner is very friendly and helpful, chatty etc. My friend and I took two small children here in July 2006 and David welcomed them, they were allowed to have the run of the field (of course they were always watched). Very laid back. NO Problems with our tent it was huge and a big separate gazebo. NO hard ball games which is VERY reasonable as I got hit in the kidneys with a rugby ball and the tent which woke the kids the middle of the night in a different site. It is very basic but you have all the facilities a stones throw away.

The location is excellent. Problem is that the owner david varies his charges according to what he thinks you will pay. I have never yet (20 years) managed to get an set tarriff from him for the year. he does produce a "wide spectrum" pricing sheet that is not date specific and allows him freedom to vary individual charges according to his estimate of you on arrival at his site. facilities very limited and not very clean - but a great location.

We have just got back from Benar Beach, and although it has rained for the first 4 days, we loved every minute of our stay there. We found the people on the site,(within the walled area)very nice and welcoming and David, the host, was helpful and freindly. The amenities are more than adequate and kept very clean with constant patrols throughout the day. We found everything we needed in Barmouth, 6 miles away, and the clubhouse on the adjoining site made us feel very welcome. And of course when the sun shone, in our opinion, there is no better place to be. Thank you David and keep up the good work.

We have been going to Benar Beach for the last 10 plus years. We do not have to travel far as we live on Anglesey, we have never had a bad time, we have always thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, how anybody can say anything but good about our hosts David and for the people that have been going for many years, Eric aswell. I really do not understand the logic. David and Eric would go out of their way more than anyone, anywhere that we have ever stayed and we have stayed in many places all over the world, but yet somewhere so close to home we cannot help ourselves but to go back, at every possible chance. We call Benar Beach our second home, we just love it so much. We have just been on the phone with David to book a Holiday for our Daughter Steph and Fiance Paul and sadly we have heard some terrible news that Eric is terminally ill.We hope David manages through this very sad time at this particularly busy time for him and his family.Eric is and always will be a legend to anyone who knows him.We would like to thank David and Eric for the many many happy times we have had at Benar Beach.Sadly we are now unable to visit as much as we would like due to new job. Keep up the good work David, some people do not know the half of running a business and dealing with the public, I have always said the good customers make up for the bad customers.

Well for starters this is the most friendly place for camping i have found in wales and i have been to a few!! David the owner is fantastic if he can help he will, I go to the site at least 3-4 times a year as its quite special to me in the fact that my Mums ashes are scattered along the coast line near to the site. As a single man i found people who are there permantly during the summer months happy and friendly, I have Cerebral Palsy and have to use a wheelchair alot and the site is accessible bit bumpy but ok. In fact i would challenge anyone to find a more tranquil place the sun rises and sunsets are amazing. This is also a partioned section for naturists too which cannot be seen by others as it is surrounded by a stone wall. I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank David for all of the help and kindnest he has shown me and hope my illness will allow me to continue to come here, many thanks David, Dolphin

We just dropped down on our "Tour de Cymru" when we were facing to drive to Snowdonia at the next day. The Benar Beach Campsite was so inviting and we were heartly welcomed by David, the owner. We felt totally like on holidays, enjoyed the warm showers and, of course, the amazing beach behind the dunes. We know, Wales is very beautiful, but these dunes just in the neighbourhood of the campsite are something special. It is good that the people take care not to loose this biotop. David, have many thanks for a warm welcome and uncomplicated handling. Whenever we can, we would be happy to come over to Benar Beach again (unfortunately it is about 1.000 miles from our home). So, we, thats Gernot Lenkner and me, Oliver, come from Stuttgart, Germany.

This was our third or fourth visit to this campsite. The facilities are basic but clean, and the owner David, is very friendly and helpful. The portacabin showers are more likely to give reliable hot water than those in the toilet block, but timing is crucial. Mid afternoon is a good time to avoid the crowds. The beach is a short walk across the carpark, and along a boardwalk through the dunes. The sunsets (and the weather was fine, so there were many) are amazing. There is a dedicated dog walking area, and you can take your dogs onto the beach if you head left at the end of the boardwalk. If you're that way inclined, there is a walled naturist area on the site, and a section of the beach to the right is designated for naturists. Dyffryn Seaside Village has a shop and a takeaway, but really, Marians Fish and Chips are very hard to beat. it's a great no-frills site. See you again in 2007 David

STOP, do not go to this campsite if you have children. we have just returned from an awful weekend here. Yes the owner is nice when you arrive but then gets very pickety about how you place your caravan, awning etc. Our friends had to move their caravan 2 foot (no exaggeration) cause it was on an angle. Kids are not allowed to play ball games, fly kites, play on their bikes, goto the toilet on their own. We were also told when we arrived that we could not use our kettles, it would use too much electric! If you are adults only then this site is for you, close to the beach, shops, showers hot in the portacabin at 40p. We will not be going here again.
