My wife and I have had many meals during the past 12 months at the Windmill in Somersham from their lunchtime and evening menu. Every meal has been excellent and even though the staff have been very busy on many occassions, the service did not suffer. We can throughly recommend the Windmill, for a relaxing enjoyable good value meal.

My wife and l passed through Somersham village on the way to a meeting, we decided to stop for a quick bite having seen that The Windmill offered lunch for a fiver, we were rather late arriving 2pm but managed to be seated and attended by a very nice young lady....to cut a long story short, the food was good as was the service, and although they were busy we were looked after very well....it was a quick snack, but we were so impressed we returned for dinner that evening and the experience was well worth it. We eat out with friends twice a week and will add the Windmill to our list of venues.

After reading some of the reviews on here I was a little worried when my friend phoned and said she had booked us a table here, There was 12 of us dining that evening, When we first walked in we were greeted by a really friendly waitress who showed us to a beautiful table, She took our drinks order and returned with menus promptly the choice was amazing after we decided and placed our order we were served with the most wonderful sharing platter of breads, when our main courses arrived well I was so shocked presentation was 12/10 it was steaming hot I had the pan fried duck with roasted English rhubarb, another friend tried the fillet steak and a few of the others had the monkfish curry well all I can say is I really don't know how this place got bad reviews because as far as me and my friends are concerned we rate The Windmill 15/10 myself and 6 others have already rebooked. If you haven't been here my advice is go it is to good to miss.

After having read the reviews I was dreading going, but as it was valentines night my husband and thought we would try it for ourselves and was very surprised! The service was very very good and the meal was excellent!! I was presented with a rose at the end of our meal, a nice touch and the gentleman singing was very good too.

Our visit to The Windmill was not only dissapointing but was quite disgusting. The one starter we had of patty was 1 slice of soft granary bread which was spread with patty on one half scraped on with a knife and the other half with chutney served with a garnish of a few fluffy lettuce leaves with 2 slices of cucumber and one raspberry and a sliver of strawberry (some salad) Our main courses were fish and chips which again was garnished with the same salad and the second one ordered from the menu of Cumberland sausage ring served with mashed potato and vegtables and our surprise when it came was one sausage on a tablespoon of potato covered with onion gravy which made poatoes swimming over the plate and served with two only asparagras spears which were so hard they flew over the plate when trying to cut them needless to say we didn'teven bother with puddings or coffee on complaining to chef the response was "well it's the same sausage." I feel this should be reported to trade discription act. The consolation of this exasperating experience was they did waver the charges for the sausage meal. The reason I was there was to book a meal for 24 later in the month as I have done in the past howerver thank goodness I knew all of this in time. I understand that this experience was repeated with an accquantence of ours on Saturday altho' they didn't complain as they had waited so long to be served they had to go but like us they won't be going there again.Such a shame as in the past they haven't been too bad

At the bar the young waitress asked me to walk to her end of the bar to be served rather than taking one or two polite steps towards me. I ordered a 2008 Merlot but was served with a 2011. The manager refused to compromise on the price but offered me an inferior 2010 Chilean Merlot. I checked the bill and was charged the full 2008 price. The swordfish was not seared, but was a damp, limp sheet of fish, cold in the centre. My so-called gourmet burger was a very salty course minced cheap cut of beef with so much gristle I left most of it. The presentation of the burger was akin to a childrens party, with a skewer through the bun and two onion rings threaded on the stick. A VERY disappointing evening.

What a disappointment after previous visitslast year. A table for 4 had been booked for 8pm and we arrived at 7.45pm. Whilst the main course, from the specials board, was OK, it was the lack of service that must be a cause for concern. After the main course we had to ask for the desert menu, and whilst waiting for it, part of the resturant lights were turned off. It took sometime (about 15 minutes) to catch the eye of a waitress, who told us that she would be with us in a minute, and proceeded to clear empty tables but never returned to get an order. At 9.20pm we gave up, and left a place, that we shall not return to until we hear it has been restored to its former standards. Such a shame, but it is a lesson in importance of good staff well trained for the continued success of a business.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Eight of us in excellents spirits looking forward to a lovely meal.First dissapointment, three of us ordered whitebait starter around £6 I think. A tiny portion of fish placed upright in a pot. Smallest was just 7 fish. Still in good spirits mains came out like the arc two by two. First two were claimed to be fillets one rare. The rare fillet was obviously a rump steak. As only one rump had been ordered he took that and started. When plates 7 and 8 arrived. Another rump noone had ordered and a wrongly cooked fillet we sent them back. A misdiagnosis was placed on the fillet which promptly reappeared and a fresh fillet was put on the grill for the last of our group. The beef and portobello mushroom pies had no mushrooms and my fillet was bikini style, a two piece. With one person forced to eat their main on their own whilst seven of us looked on it was time to complain. After asking for a manager to come over we suggested that a gesture be made for the inconvenience caused. This was the worst part of our meal the service in dealing with a complaint. After first making out all that had happened was 1 steak was cooked wrong. That lie put to rest when I pointed out two rumps arrived when only one was ordered. A solitary free dessert was offered for the person just finished eating. "As only one persons food had to served after". I pointed out three meals had gone back to the kitchens before being sorted and an offer for 3 desserts was begrudgingly made. By this time the petty haggling and lack of effort to treat this professionaly resulted in us just demanding the bill paying up and leaving. None of us will return and all of us have decided to let everyone we know our experience.

Excellent service, wine, food and ambience. Big niggle - cold plates on three consecutive occassions with no apology ! There is plenty of competition - I just do not understand the Chef Patron.

I must disagree with the above comment. Myself and my wife took a visit to the Windmill last year and we were not that impressed with the quality of the food. We recently came back after hearing a new head chef had taken over, and the food was amazing! the different textures and flavours from each dish was just perfect, we will be recomending the Windmill to all friends and family.

We have visited the windmill on many occasions in the past year and recommended it to many of our friends and family. We have had 2 meals there in the past month and the standard of the food has fallen, the fish was very well done and tasteless and the vegetables were soft.We also noticed that it was not as busy as usual,we were told that the head chef had left, lets hope he will be replaced by someone as good and as enthusiastic as the last one otherwise i am sure that other regulars like ourselves will take their custom elsewhere. What a great loss.
