Having not visited this pub for 18 months, I can say after a recent return that the new landlord seems to have taken on board all of the points I made in August 2005, and that the pub really has turned itself around. From the wide selection of bar snacks (hot and cold!) to a recently introduced quiz machine, the new host of the Green Inn has dragged the establishment kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On the day I visited I tried the Guinness, which was competitively priced, and my wife had a very reasonable glass of red wine. We both had a jacket potato each, and we were both impressed with the selection of fillings on offer. A lovely lunchtime meal, and all for less than a tenner, including drinks. With the Christmas decorations up, the fire on, and a cold winters day outside, we could have spent the rest of the afternoon in there quite easily, if not for a hospital appointment. Highly recommended!

The Green Inn is located in the quiet East Cleveland village of Skelton Green, and the views offered from the front windows across the hills to Brotton and Saltburn are spectacular. The Green Inn offers a nice quite atmosphere, as there are often very few people in the pub. Passing trade from walkers on the Cleveland Way is criminally wasted, as the landlady seems oblivious to any chance of making a sale to this lucrative market. Entertainment comes in many guises: there is a quiz night on a Thursday night, which is always plenty of fun, even thought the same people always seem to win. Incorporated into this Quiz Night is a section called ‘Play Your Cards Right’, which isn’t so much a rip-off off the TV game show of the same name, but a direct lift. It is sometime hard to tell if the PYCR prize has been won, as the landlady whizzes through the game with apparently only her and the lucky participant aware that the game has commenced, and indeed, been not won. Entertainment in the guise of a ‘Live Artiste’ is frequently offered on a Saturday night. If a middle-aged Tony Christie wannabe, knocking out third rate 70’s and 80’s ballads is your thing, then make a bee-line to The Green Inn. In the unlikely event that you time your visit to this pub on one of the evenings when no ‘live’ entertainment is on offer, then you can avail yourself of a selection of traditional bar games: Darts and that. The in-house entertainment and music on offer consists of horse racing on a Saturday afternoon on either of the two TVs, or perhaps you’d like to sing along to the latest Irish pub songs with the usual crew to be found in the Green Inn. To finish, The Green Inn is a traditional village pub on the edge of the N Yorks Moors, looked after by a charming and warm landlady, who tries her best in the face of apathy and good advice. Come to the Green Inn – You’ll never leave!
