I don't understand all these bad reviews! In the Cambridge evening news, the chef was give FIVE STARS. We decided it would be worth a visit. We were not dissappointed. The friendly staff and lovely atmosphere made the whole experience very enjoyable. I particularly liked the company of George, the cat. I highly reccommend it! One of the best local pubs in Essex. Brilliant all round. I can only think those who have written negative veiws are very stuck up or have strange taste buds I have visted many restruants in this area and this is as good as any. beutiful location, excellent service and a very good standard of food at a fair but not cheap price but worth every extra penny. the cambridge evening news food critic gave it a great reveiw and I have to agree. My wife and I will certainly be back! !

We booked a table to celebrate my sons birthday. We were so disappointed. My daughter had pate for a starter, and had to send the toast back as it was too black to eat! Not a good start we thought. My daughter in law had so much Balsamic on her salad she had to use a napkin or two to mop it up! Alas the main courses were not good either, the roasts all had the same "orange" gravy, so we did not know if we were eating pork, chicken or beef. My husband is a chef (and has cooked for HM Queen), he never finds fault with anything, but he was lost for words with this meal. Needless to say we passed on the sweet menu!An expensive mistake - never again

My wife had parsnip soup as starter which she said was good. I had the haddock with mussels as a main course. The fish smelt really strong and the heavy creamy sauce masked a less than fresh fish. The mussels were inedible. I tried three and then gave up. They were dry and fibrous. I am a mussel fan, regular trips to France and living in a coastal region mean they are a frequent meal. The Dial mussels were without doubt the worst mussels I have ever had. My wife had a chicken dish for a main course. This was dry, her potatoes poor and the cauliflower so undercooked she had difficulty getting her knife into it.No one wants soggy overcooked vegetables but virtually raw is not acceptable. The waitresses were pleasant but the service exceedingly slow. The bill came quickly though ! The Dial is a really pleasant clean and beautiful place but the food ruins it.The local who said he could not understand peoples complaints as his beefburger/hamburger was good perhaps tragically sums it up. Shame won't go again.

I am quite shocked & saddened about the reviews of 'The Dial'. As a resident in Elmdon I visit the pub regularly and enjoy good wine, food and company. I have just had a superb lunch there (the home made burgers are delicious)and I look forward to the 'Village Supper' every Wednesday, which is great value. Sometimes there is a little wait for food, this is only because it is cooked to order. I would give the pub a try and I'm sure you will enjoy it! See you in there!!

We came across this little pub whilst driving through the Essex countryside - we wish we had not bothered to stop! The food was over-priced, luke warm and the service was dreadful. The bread was not fresh, the wine list poor and the only good thing was the ale.

quite a different experience to the other reviews: Saturday pub lunch. I look for the basics done well and good beer. I had a superb steak and kidney pie with vegetables. The pie was very very good with crisp pastry, natural juices and lots and lots of the main two ingredients. We also had ham eggs and chips. This was better than the same idea at a pub in Withersfield last week - and the deep section floury chips were great. A pint of excellent mild - an English guinness to me - hit the spot.

this was the second time of visiting - the first time was October 2008 and the food then was good but the service incredibly slow so we thought we would 'buy local'and give it another go. Oh dear! The wine menu here is very poor - there is little choice on the red side other than Merlot and Cabinets! We asked for a bread basket and they presented us with two slices of pre-packed, ready sliced (thinly i might add) of what tasted like the value bread i bought when i was a student. The starters of Thai Crab cakes came out clearly not freshly made as they were frozen in the middle dripping with oil where they had been deep fried and the two mouthfuls i took before finding the frozen bit tasted bland and to be honest like well i struggle for a word here to best desribe the taste. They did oblige and change it for the soup but i then waited another 15 mins for my soup to come out - the soup was tasty and wholesome but the bread again let it down as did the butter which had clearly been microwaved as it was frozen and solid on top and liquid underneath. The main of Pork medallions and Rack of lamb were by far the worst cuts of meat i and my husband had ever tasted. My lamb was bland, no flavour, overdone and very fatty. The mash was meant to be leeky but there was not a trace of leeks and these had been substituted by butter beans! The Pork was like bullets, the potatoes wet and sloppy and the vegetables were well it brings a whole new meaning to 'al dente'. We proceeded on to dessert - Creme Brulee a classic that even my father can cook. It was a bowl of what i can only describe as thick cream that had been whisked and cooled. Not a hint of Vanilla and the top was not cruchy. The fresh coffee came out in a cafetier and tasted like instant (watery at that) - so my husband finished his coffee and lifted the plunger to inspect his £2.50 filter coffee. Only to find not a trace of coffee grinds - when the waitress was confronted she confirmed the worst - Instant!!! There were two other couples in the restaurant both of whom shared our dreadful experience. We will not be returning

Oh dear! Just when a new addition to the prospects of good eating in an attractive place near Cambridge seemed to have arrived, it is off the list - permanently. On previous visits the service has been slow - always, actually. Today, though was a step too far. First, when we asked why we had been asked to take our seats but seen no food for 20 minutes, without explanation, we were told that one of our orders had been wrongly prepared so we all had to wait while the correct dish was cooked. Next, despite having made point of wanting our beef pink, the two plates of roast beef arrived grey as grey can be - clealry having been plated and kept warm while the error was rectified. Inexcusable in my view. Lastly - but certainl;y not least, the beef was OFF - rank to the nose and frankly rotten. The proprietor was called and admitted same. Hos response was professional enough but too late, as you will agree. That meat cannot have been cooked with the chef unaware of its condition so we will, despite the place being very attractive, not be back to claim the free wine offered in compensation. Sad.
