Another stunning meal in the Penycae Inn, both Norm & myself really enjoyed our foodie experience there, last night. I had a "special", hake fish with a gorgeous sauce & scrummy vegs!, Norms chicken was cooked to perfection!, we also shared a dessert, lemon & lime cheesecake, to die for!X Thank you to Anthony & Marcus & staff.xx

have to eat my previous words of moaning about our previous visit some time ago! How times have changed! Norm & I were very warmly welcomed into the cosy bar area, & the staff were soo friendly, & knowledgable about the food & drinks on offer. After a cheeky glass of red, we were shown to our table, upstairs, the dining area is still stunning. We cannot fault our food, my lamb was cooked to perfection, & Norm really enjoyed his fillet steak. We need to go again !! In the New Year, we will.. Thank you to Anthony & staff.x

looking forward to visiting the penycae inn after reading on the evening post that it won an award for best family pub.when we arrived i was supprised by how upmarket they were trying to be for a local traditional pub.my husband and i both had 2 course set lunch, i ordered prawns and smoked salmon which was average as the prawns were'nt good quality.my husband had smoked duck breast to start which was a tiny portion and bread came with the starters which i was supprised was ordinary white bread. mains was fish and chips, the cod was lovely but the chips were on the hard side.my husband had homemade curry and was very dissapointed to find the rice tasted like it had been reheated or microwaved not freshly cooked and the chicken in the curry tasted like reheated cooked cubes, far from homemade.we have eaten in lots of fine restaurants, but the penycae isn't won of them and needs to concentrate more on the food and less on their image.the food they serve don't warrant the prices they charge.

We often dine at Egon Ronay restaurants,
but the meal we had today surpassed any meal we've had. This restaurant deserves a Michelin Star.

We were delighted to be able to get a table in such a lovely restaurant, especially as we hadn't booked and it was busy BUT several items weren't available so choice was limited. I ordered a smoked salmon starter but ended up with crayfish cocktail as the smoked salmon had run out. It was very ordinary. I then ordered a Sirloin Steak - BIG MISTAKE! It looked very nice but I was unable to eat it as it was SO TOUGH. The restaurant manager had the audacity to try to cut it for me! I refused to pay for it, but was offered no real apology. We left just paying for our starters and one very average trout main course (£30+). Needless to say we won't be going again - such a shame as the location is lovely. On top of this it was a birthday treat - we don't eat out very often. We will use our local pub in future - it's cheap, good quality and cheerful.

called and booked a table, when we arrived, were disapointed to find that the table was situatated at the foot of the stairs, on the ground floor, near the toilets!.. Squeezed in, and NOT, in the upstairs restaraunt. Noticed the staff were enjoying themselves, WE werent!..first course came without a main ingredient, but we were charged for it!..This place is very lovely to sit in, nice surroundings, but we wont be back, found the Abercrave Inn, further down the valley, to be much better, and the staff very welcoming, some tips to be learnt from them, Penycae..

Called there this evening and was thoroughly disappointed. The 'staff' were watching the'match' on TV and any chance of a meal in a relaxing atmosphere was NIL.
Place was in darkness, uninviting and we couldn't even hear what the barmaid was trying to say the TV was so loud.
We had just finished a 14 mile hike across the mountains and were starving, cold and in need of a nice comfortable place to unwind....found it in the Old Glais 10 miles down the road. The Penycae needs to decide if it's catering for it's clientele or the staff.
