I work as an artist for Blackpool Illuminations and still visit them every year! If you have young children, you can't beat them. They're unique and a British institution. Six miles of illuminated features (including Dr Who and designs by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen) for free! There's not many things you can say that about these days. The best way to see them is to get out of your car and take a walk (or maybe one of the illuminated trams). Given the traffic (particularly at weekends or just after switch on), this is often quicker anyway and you can stop for some Blackpool Rock or fish and chips. The best section to walk is Gynn Square roundabout to Red Bank Road in Bispham where all the large animated tableaux are and you can get close to them. Walking is definitely my recommendation. Most people who visit the lights and don't enjoy it do so from inside the confines of their car. Driving bumper to bumper for six miles with restricted views through the windscreen and windows, plus no toilet facilities is bound to make anyone grumpy! Get out of the car and give your children some lovely Blackpool sea air! Even if its blustery, they'll still enjoy it more than being couped up in the car! If you want further persuasion and to see behind the scenes photos of the Illuminations being made, visit my website at: www.sarahmyerscough.co.uk.
