Though the ancient village of Alvechurch is in Worcestershire its Birmingham dialling code indicates proximity to that city, just a few miles north. The settlement, officially a village of about 5000 souls, has the facilities of a small town with several pubs, a wide range of shops and eateries, and three places of worship, the oldest of which is the parish church of St Lawrence dating from the 13th century. From the Domesday Book we know Alvechurch existed at the Conquest, but with its sheltered position among a valley with the River Arrow running through it, as does the Roman Icknield Way, it is probable the place is far older. That situation as a transport hub was maintained with the building of the Birmingham and Worcester Canal in the 18th century, the coming of the railway in the 19th, and the building of the M42 running E-W just north of the village. The M42 is accessed via the A441 which happily now bypasses the village. Easy access to the motorway system and retention of its train service mean Alvechurch is a commuter centre; but there are employment opportunities in and around the place too. Sitting amid the Birmingham green belt, and with a pleasing mixture of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian architecture, and pretty spots like a single-track canal bridge, Alvechurch is what estate agents like to call a much sought-after location.
