Some 13 miles (21km) to the Northeast of Hereford, in the Frome Valley, is the small village of Bishops Frome. In 1086 (Domesday) the manor was in the hands of the Bishop of Hereford - hence the Village`s name. Agriculture was and still is the mainstay of life in and around the Frome Valley; Hops and Hereford`s famous cider apples are both grown in the area, and to cater for the wine drinkers, vines are under cultivation at the nearby Frome Valley Vineyard. The Parish Church of St.Mary probably stands on the site of a Saxon Church although no evidence has been found as yet. Built in the 12th century in the Norman style the church extensively rebuilt in the 19th century but still retains some 12th & 14th century features. The Font is of particular interest it is about 700 years old and is one of only eight Breccia or Cornerstone Fonts in the country. The church is approached through charming old Lychgate. Other buildings of note close by are: the Brockhampton Estate with its medieval moated manor house and timber framed gatehouse and Cheyney Chapel which is now a self catering holiday cottage. The village still has two pubs, the Green Dragon (16th century) and the Chase Inn, built in the 19th century to cater for the Hop Pickers. Bishops Frome is an ideal location for the Three Counties Show Ground and the racecourses at Hereford and Worcester, with the vineyard; Mayfields Brewery and the Hop Pocket Craft Centre close by Bishops Frome offers a quiet retreat away from the city bustle.
