Hugh Town is an attractive village positioned on the south western edge of St Mary's Isle, the capital of the Islands of Scilly which are made up of a group of Islands comprising St Mary's, Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes and St Martin's, together with other uninhabited Islands which are positioned 28 miles or so from Lands End, on the coast of Cornwall. @ Hugh Town has an intriguing history which dates as far back as the Stone Age, with remnants of ancient burial sites, and fortifications from the English Civil War and, from its humble beginnings of a small farming settlement centuries ago it grew, and today it is home to just over a thousand people. Once the industry of ship building played an important role in the economy of the Island, however Tourism and the growing of flowers, together with fishing features heavily today. There is an excellent choice of shops to explore, pubs, cafes and restaurants that continue to offer a warm welcome. Visitors can enjoy spectacular coastal walks, beaches, woodland, and a harbour where ships sail from the Quayside to Penzance and the nearby Islands and for anyone who wishes to stay there is a choice of cottages, B&B's, guesthouses and a hotel with a fascinating past.
