The Isle of Harris is not in itself an island but forms the southern part of the ‘Long Island’, the largest and most northerly of the Western Isles of Scotland, the northern part is the Isle of Lewis. Harris is further divided into North and South; North Harris adjoins Lewis by a barrier of high mountains running along their border from Loch Resort in the west to Loch Seaforth in the east. North and South Harris are separated by West and East Loch Tarbet with the main settlement, the village of Tarbet situated on a strip of land between the lochs. Tarbet is the main port with regular ferry service and is an important fishing centre. With its breathtaking scenery and abundance of wildlife, Harris is a popular tourist resort; it has holiday accommodation, shops, including the Harris Tweed Shop, cafes, restaurants and pubs. North Harris has rugged landscape with deep sea-lochs and rolling mountains including, Clisham, the highest mountain in the Western Isles standing 799 metres high. South Harris has an abundance of white-sand beaches ideal for surfing and popular for kite-buggying. Lying off the south-eastern coast is the Island of Taransay where the BBC TV series ‘Castaway’ was filmed in 2000. Further attractions include a golf course, the Medieval Church of St. Clements, Amhuinnsuidhe Castle and the Seallam visitor-centre.
