Templepatrick is a village located mid-way between Antrim and Ballyclare, close to the M2 motorway and Belfast International Airport. The village is dominated by the historic Castle Upton, whose demesne wall stands along one side of the main street. A striking gateway gives access to the castle, a tower house built in 1611 and later extended by the Templeton family, who owned Templepatrick. Some improvements were made to the castle by the great Georgian architect Robert Adam, including the stables and the family mausoleum, which is now a National Trust property. Visitors are also invited to view the castle's art gallery, housed in an arched refectory. The luxurious Hilton Templepatrick Hotel & Country Club lies on Castle Upton estate land, offering guests a championship woodland golf course and facilities for horse-riding and fishing. Templepatrick is an attractive residential spot and one-time winner of the Best Kept Village award. Here, old picture-postcard churches exist alongside modern venues such as the Coloured Rain art gallery, named after artist Basil Blackshaw's painting. An unusual attraction at Templepatrick is Patterson's Spade Mill, which recreates the days of the Industrial Revolution. As an added bonus, guests may buy a spade, handmade to their own specifications.
