Charlbury is a small northwest Oxfordshire market town bordering the Cotswolds. It stands on a hillside overlooking the Evenlode river and the Wychwood forest. The town was made prosperous during the 18th century thanks to its glove making industry. Charlbury's parish church of St.Mary the Virgin is 17th Century in origin. The town has recently become well known locally for the annual Charlbury Riverside Festival, a free rock and world music festival held on Mill Field, once the location of an old watermill. Another popular event is the Beer Festival with food and live music also on offer. This event normally takes place on the second Saturday in July. Also in July is the Cornbury Festival, a weekend long music festival taking place in part of the Cornbury Park Estate, owned by Lord Rotherwick. There is also an annual street fair in mid September. Charlbury has a number of small shops including a small supermarket, as well as four pubs and a café. The small green, known as Playing Close, has a series of attractive cottages looking across to a little neo-Jacobean drinking fountain. Charlbury also has a recently renovated town museum in Market Street, open mainly at weekends, exhibiting the traditional crafts and industries of the town.
