Chiselhampton is a small village within the civil parish of Stadhampton in Oxfordshire. It is located close to the River Thame, about four miles south east of Oxford. Other local settlements in the parish of Stadhampton include: Marsh Baldon, Chalgrove, Berinsfield and Newington. There is one pub in the village, The Coach & Horses Inn on the River Thame. The medieval Chiselhampton Bridge is of historical English Civil War significance, and also a popular point on the river for coarse fishing. The village church of St Katherine’s is an unaltered Georgian chapel built in 1762, beloved of the poet John Betjeman. The church lies to the north of the village, close to the Coach and Horses who hold a key to it. Now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, services are only held three or four times a year as it is a redundant church, the benefice being united with St.John the Baptist church in Stadhampton. During the English Civil War, on June 18, 1643, Chiselhampton was the location of the death of war hero and ‘Father of Democracy’, Colonel John Hampden, after he was mortally wounded in the Battle of Chalgrove Field. A monument to him was erected in 1843, adjoining the nearest road to the battlefield.
