Cuddesdon is a village located in the hundred of Bullingdon, within the county of Oxfordshire, 2 miles from Wheatley and just 5 miles from the city of Oxford. It takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon "Cudde's Dune" (meaning Cudde's Hill). The village is sited on a hill that overlooks southern Oxfordshire, northern Berkshire, the Aylesbury Vale in central Buckinghamshire, and a portion of west Bedfordshire. There are views of both the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs stretching from Ivinghoe Beacon in the east to Didcot Power Station in the west. There is a fairly active social life in the village, mostly centred around The Bat and Ball pub and the Village Hall, with annual fireworks, a village fete and various groups which meet regularly. Cuddesdon has a parish church; the Church of All Saints, which is also home to an Anglican theological college, Ripon College, the only rural Anglican seminary in the world. Due to the historical and current strength of ecclesiastical connections, the village is also known as the "Holy Hill". After his retirement in 1991, Robert Runcie, former Archbishop of Canterbury and one time vicar of Cuddesdon and college principal, took the title Baron Runcie of Cuddesdon.
