Deddington is a large village in north Oxfordshire, about 6 miles south of Banbury in the parish of Deddington which incorporate the villages of Clifton and Hempton. After the Norman invasion of 1066 the village was owned by Odo of Bayeux, half-brother to William the Conqueror, who built Deddington Castle. The castle was almost completely demolished in the 14th century. Deddington has many historical buildings and picturesque houses made of honey coloured ironstone. The Town Hall is near the centre of the Market Place, a roughly rectangular area with a green. The village has several independent shops, hotels, restaurants and pubs including the Unicorn Inn and The Red Lion on Market Place and the Deddington Arms, the former magistrate’s court, dating from the 16th century. There is a monthly farmers' market held in Market Place. The Parish church dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul dates in its oldest parts from the early 13th century. The church contains the notable Jones Memorial stained glass windows. Daeda's Wood was the very first in the Woods-on-Your-Doorstep Millennium project sponsored by the The Woodland Trust. It consists of 3500 maturing trees, a footpath down to the river Swere with seating, open areas and an abundance of developing wild flowers and birdlife.
