Steeple Aston is a village in north Oxfordshire, situated on the River Cherwell, and in the Cherwell Valley. The Church of St Peter and St Paul is to the north of the village and is the origin of the Steeple Aston cope, an important piece of 14th century embroidery, now on loan to the V&A. Although the village is called Steeple Aston, the church has a tower. There are two pubs which serve food in the village: The Red Lion and The White Lion. There is also a village shop and post office, a village hall, and a sports and recreation club. Within walking distance of Steeple Aston, Rousham Park House is renowned for its extensive landscape gardens designed by William Kent in the 1730s. The gardens are open daily and the house is open only by prior arrangement. In Steeple Aston stands a folly, known as the "Eyecatcher". It looks like the ruins of an ancient abbey, but in fact was built in the 18th century for the owners of Rousham House There are many ancient and listed houses in the village. The primary school, Dr Radcliffe’s, was founded in 1640, and the original building is still in evidence, although now a private house.
