Wheatley is a village six miles east of Oxford, in Oxfordshire. Finds from a Saxon cemetery discovered in Wheatley in 1883 are housed in the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford. Wheatley used to be known for its stone quarrying. The stone was used for buildings during the 13th and 18th centuries which include Windsor Castle and Merton College. The village lock-up, built in 1834, is a pyramid-shaped stone structure standing near the edge of the old quarry site. More recently it has been opened every May Day as a visitor attraction. There were once ten pubs in the village to cater for the stone quarrying workforce. Five remain today. Nearby is Shotover Park incorporating Shotover House which houses the library and social centre for the village. The Windmill in Windmill Lane stands above the village. There is a manor house which was enlarged and improved in 1601. The George coaching inn stands opposite the manor and has been turned into a residence with courtyards and gift shop. Wheatley is the site of the high rise tower of Oxford Brookes University. Waterperry Gardens in Wheatley consists of eight acres of landscaped ornamental gardens, plus museum, gallery, long barn and teashop.
