Dungiven is a small and fascinating market town located on the main road between Derry and Belfast. Overlooked by the brooding Benbradagh Mountain, Dungiven has an imposing castle, inhabited by the ruling O'Cahan clan centuries ago and since restored to become a hotel. Dungiven Castle is surrounded by 20 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, woodlands, wetlands and ponds which are free to enter all year round. Another scenic attraction, nearby, is Banagher Glen, which is also a bird-watcher's paradise. It leads upwards through ancient woodlands to the forest setting of Altnaheglish Dam and Reservoir. Historians can't fail to be intrigued by the town's Augustinian priory containing the ornate 15th Century tomb of Cooey- na-Gall, one of the O'Cahan chiefs. A more contemporary attraction, Altahullion Wind Farm lays on parking facilities and easy access to the visitor turbine. Dungiven has a decent range of shops and pubs, and a sports pavilion with excellent fitness and leisure facilities. This is the ideal base for travellers wishing to explore the mountain scenery of the Sperrins and the memorable Glenshane Pass, whose road rises to more than 1,000 feet as it travels eastwards to Belfast. This is the location of Ireland's highest pub, the Ponderosa.
