Cookstown is a thriving town that also benefits from a wonderful location. To the west rise the rugged and timeless Sperrin Mountains, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To the east is the equally delightful scenery of Lough Neagh, the biggest freshwater lake in Ireland and the UK. Visitors to the town will discover great shopping in an enticing variety of small specialist shops, major high-street stores and the bustling Saturday market. There's a good nightlife, too, and plenty of entertainment, from car rallies and motorbike races to concerts, comedy, dance and drama at the Burnavon Arts and Cultural Centre and swimming, fitness and tenpin bowling at Cookstown Leisure Centre. Outdoor sports are widely enjoyed in the surrounding countryside. Anglers can fish for trout in the River Ballinderry, flowing through Cookstown, or head instead for Lough Fea or Lough Neagh, where boating trips are also popular. Other sporting facilities include Killymoon and Slate golf clubs and Beech Hill Stables in Moneymore, three miles away. Also in Moneymore, a model village and a 17th Century manor home, Springhill House, are leading attractions. Walkers, cyclists and drivers will be richly rewarded hereabouts, liable to encounter everything from stone circles and high crosses to nature reserves, forests and quiet country paths.
