Omagh - the county town of Tyrone - lies at the foot of the Sperrin Mountains. It's a place that celebrates its countryside and heritage while operating as a lively centre for business, shopping, arts, crafts, eating, drinking, music and nightlife. Omagh will not forget the innocent townsfolk killed in 1998's devastating terrorist bomb: in 2008, work began on a 10th anniversary tribute - a new Memorial Garden linked via a "pathway of sunlight", cleverly created by mirrors, to a glass pillar on the bomb site. The message, that light follows even the darkest moments, is reflected in ongoing improvements to the town centre. Omagh's biggest visitor attraction is the Ulster American Folk Park, an open-air "living history" museum dwelling on local families' emigration to the US in past centuries. The An Creagan Visitor Centre, meanwhile, explains the archaeology of an area rich with megalithic tombs and stone circles. Nature-lovers will especially love the beauty of Gorton Glen Forest Park, Gortin Lakes and the neighbouring Boorin Nature Reserve, all within seven miles of the town, while sporty types will enjoy Omagh Leisure Centre, one of the most modern in the UK, and outdoor activities including golf, fishing, riding and clay-pigeon shooting.
