Bantry is a thriving market town located at the head of beautiful Bantry Bay in West Cork. The Friday market in the pedestrianised town square is traditionally busy, although the monthly farmers' market is an even bigger draw, with people travelling for miles to buy and sell fresh produce and livestock. Bantry also has a successful fishing industry, helped by the bay's deep, natural harbour and its rich stock of fish and seafood. A particular speciality, Bantry mussels are in demand internationally, and the townsfolk celebrate the harvest with an annual Mussel Fair. The three-day extravaganza features outdoor entertainment, music and free mussels for all in the pubs and restaurants, and a fireworks display. Bantry and its neighbouring towns offer all the usual coastal activities, and the surrounding countryside, dotted with ancient monuments, is ideal for driving, cycling and hiking. The challenging Sheep's Head Way, starting at Bantry, has been voted Best Walk In Ireland. The town has many historic sights, some dating from the 17th Century, but the most popular visitor attraction is Bantry House, a Georgian stately home with a superb art-filled interior, fabulous gardens and sensational views over the bay and Whiddy Island to the Caha Mountains beyond.
