The lively market town of Midleton is surrounded by the richly agricultural countryside of east Cork. As a result, the town is renowned for its excellent restaurants, serving fresh local vegetables and fish brought in straight from the sea, not many miles away. Food-lovers will equally enjoy the busy farmers' market, and a range of gourmet shops. Midleton is also familiar to whiskey connoisseurs the world over, having had a distillery since the early 1800s. Production continues today in a newer building, while the Old Midleton Distillery houses a heritage centre, exhibiting the world's largest pot still and a working water wheel. Visitors completing a tour are invited to stay a while in the tasting room, furnished in the style of a traditional Irish pub, for a complimentary tot of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Elsewhere, historic churches and buildings such as the grey-stone Midleton College, founded in 1696, recall earlier times in a town which also caters for contemporary interests with chain stores, designer shops and a multi-screen cinema. Sports fans will not have to travel far to find opportunities for golf, riding, tennis, fishing and watersports, while families are within a short drive of sandy beaches, beautiful countryside and charming villages.
