Dungloe is the main town in west Donegal and the capital of The Rosses - an area which, in turn, forms part of an Irish-speaking Gaeltacht region. A lively coastal town, Dungloe acts an ideal base for touring the county and its unforgettably scenic coastline. However, visitors flock here for two special reasons. One is the fishing. Dungloe is right beside the ocean and a river, and with easy access to 130 local lakes, it has become renowned for brown, sea and rainbow trout fishing. The other great attraction of the town is its annual Mary From Dungloe Festival, held every summer. The festival, which commemorates a real-life, former inhabitant of Dungloe, elects a "Mary" every year from among competing young ladies representing Irish communities around the world. The winning Mary acts for the next year as an ambassador for the festival, which also features music concerts, sports contests, races and children's competitions. Away from all this revelry, Dungloe has something for everybody, from golfing, hiking, hill-walking, cycling, mountain-climbing and horse- riding in the surrounding countryside to great dining and friendly pub singsongs and traditional sessions in the town at night, not forgetting the beautiful beaches that look out over the islands in the bay.
