| 10 Places to Stay

Claregalway is a village situated six or seven miles north east of Galway city. Although it is now very much part of Galway's commuter belt and also has a lot of traffic passing through, being located at the junction of the busy N17 and N18 roads, Claregalway has retained its own historic village atmosphere, and it is a popular base for visitors. The one-time agricultural settlement boasts several impressive old structures dating back centuries. The remains of Claregalway Friary - a Franciscan abbey built in the 13th Century - are truly striking and well-preserved. And the tall, square keep of the 15th Century Claregalway Castle forms a distinctive landmark. Most interesting of all, perhaps, is the Nine Arches Bridge, which was restored in 2001, even though the River Clare that once flowed beneath it was re-routed as long ago as the 17th Century. The dry bridge now sits beside the N17. Visitors staying in Claregalway enjoy their proximity to lively Galway city, whose attractions range from arts, culture, music and street parties to world-famous annual events such as the Galway Races. Drivers are perfectly placed to explore the awe-inspiring Atlantic coastline, and outdoor sports, in and out of the water, are right on the doorstep.
