| 10 Places to Stay

The picturesque cathedral town of Loughrea stands on the north bank of beautiful Lough Rea. It's conveniently placed for drivers, since it's situated roughly 35 kilometers south-east of Galway city on the main N6 route to Dublin. However, visitors intending to stop and relax will find much to enjoy locally. The lake itself offers great opportunities for swimming, canoeing, sailboarding and fishing, being well stocked with pike, perch and trout, and with boat hire and licences readily available. There is also exceptional fishing in some of the nearby rivers. Golfers are welcome, too, in Loughrea, which boasts an 18-hole course set in rolling parkland, overlooked by the scenic Slieve Aughty Mountains. There are many historic buildings to admire around here, from the idyllic 12th Century Cloghan Castle (now a self-catering hotel) to St Brendan's Cathedral, which was built at the turn of the 1900s and is world-famous for its magnificent stained- glass windows. Some rather older art - dating back to the ancient Celtic era - can be seen at the Turoe Stone, near Loughrea. Families, meanwhile, will find plenty to do in the area, from the thrills of go- karting to informative days out at the Toroe Farm & Leisure Park and the Dartfield Horse Museum.
