Gunthorpe is a picturesque village perfectly placed on the banks of the River Trent in the ancient county of Nottinghamshire. It has a fine bridge spanning the Trent River which was constructed in the 20th Century built to replace an old Toll bridge and is the only road bridge between Newark and Nottingham. The village has an interesting history and dates back many centuries which saw the Vikings arrive by Long Ships when they invaded our shores some of whom decided to settle in Gunthorpe, and the bloody battle which was bravely fought nearby when Queen Boudicca and her army were victorious when they defeated the Roman's. Today's visitors are drawn here for its pretty setting with its riverside walks and quiet location. The Main Street has a wealth of old houses and cottages lining the road, and close by the Lock the Tea Rooms have tasty morsels on the menu. There is a 17th Century Coaching Inn and restaurants nearby, and for those who are tempted to stay there is a good choice of cottages, B&B's and comfortable hotels on offer. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside with a network of footpaths to explore and easy access to the Trent Valley Way, and yet it is only a few miles from the bustling historic city of Nottingham.
