The name Lowdham means 'village by the loud stream', although the name was first recorded as 'Lideheme' in 1046. This suggests the origins as being the Norse word 'hlid', or slope, and the suffix heme from the Norse 'heimr' meaning homestead or village. The village itself is situated between Nottingham and Southwell in Nottinghamshire, on the junction of the A612 and A6097. The dual carriageway leading to Doncaster and the north splits the village into two halves. To the west of this road are the old church and castle mound. The church dates back to the 14th century. To the north east of the road is Lowdham Mill, a remnant of the frame knitting industry that was important to this area in the 19th century. In 1844 there were as many as 94 working stocking frames in the village alone! There is a train connecting from Lowdham village to Nottingham and two miles from the railway station is HM Prison Lowdham Grange. Lowdham is a part of the predominantly rural Newark and Sherwood district of eastern Nottinghamshire. It is, of course, not far from Sherwood Forest, the legendary home of Robin Hood. Each year in June, the village holds the Lowdham Book Festival, which is growing in popularity with greater numbers visiting each year.
