Although it is officially a village, and its residents are keen to keep the community distinct from the urban sprawl of larger settlements nearby, Ruddington is a sizeable place with facilities that would not disgrace some smaller towns; indeed with more than 6000 residents it is larger than many such places. It has schooling from kindergarten through to sixth form; a library; post office; several bank and building society branches (and vitally a couple of cash machines) and various village shops. Sited just a few miles’ drive south of Nottingham on the A60 it benefits from that city’s entertainment, retail and economic facilities while staying independent of it, though Ruddington does have a good handful of pubs, several eateries, and a hotel whose buildings date from the 17th century. The village has become a significant visitor destination over the years, housing as it does three fascinating museums, and a heritage railway. The museums are devoted to the framework knitting industry that once employed the bulk of the local population; a recreation of old shops; and transport history. The railway, the Great Central, runs from Ruddington to Loughborough via East Leeke, the facilities at Ruddington to be found adjoining the Rushcliffe Country Park which stands on the land once occupied by a huge WWII munitions centre.
