The Dingle Peninsula is one of the country's most wonderfully scenic regions, and Dingle town is its focus. Located on the south-west coast of Ireland, the peninsula is a place where spectacular mountain landscapes, loved by walkers and climbers, are dotted with more than 2,000 sites of ancient interest. And Dingle - the most westerly town in Europe - provides a beautiful, cosmopolitan base for visitors wishing to experience the glories of this area of County Kerry. Nestling on the north shore of Dingle Bay (home to a friendly dolphin called Fungi) and sheltered by mountains, Dingle is a market town and fishing port filled with bobbing boats in a natural harbour, colourfully painted buildings, craft shops selling everything from tweeds and woollens to wooden goods and pottery, art galleries, restaurants serving fresh catches, and pubs of all sizes, many carousing into the late hours with traditional Irish music. The town also has an aquarium. Only ten miles away is the boarding point for boat trips to the isolated Blasket Islands, offering a rare opportunity to glimpse seals, sharks, whales, puffins and gannets in their natural environment. Travellers should note that most road signs to Dingle are written, in Gaelic, as An Daingean.
