Killarney is one of Ireland's most popular tourist destinations, offering a combination of world-class scenery, historic buildings, outdoor sports enjoyed in vividly beautiful surroundings, and all- year-round festivals. A warm and welcoming town with excellent restaurants, pubs and nightclubs, Killarney is surrounded by mountains and forests, and it's here that the magnificent Ring of Kerry scenic route begins and ends. Even more famously, the town lies beside the Lakes of Killarney - three large loughs at the heart of Killarney National Park. The 26,000-acre park also contains mountains, wide spreads of woodland and moorland, a wonderful range of wildlife, Muckross House (a Victorian mansion) and its superb gardens, and two ancient abbeys, the ruined Inisfallen Abbey and the 15th Century Muckross Abbey. Ross Castle, a medieval building, has been impressively restored, and from here, visitors may take boat trips around Lough Leane. Steeped in history and heritage and rich in arts and culture, Killarney stages fun events throughout the year to celebrate everything from literature to sports and music. The Christmas festival carries on for several weeks with street markets, concerts, musicals, parades, parties and competitions. Outdoor activities include golf (with several courses to choose from), horse- riding, climbing, fishing, boating, walking, cycling and ice-skating.
