Bardon Mill is the name used to describe a collection of hamlets on the northern slopes of the South Tyne Valley between Haltwhistle and Haydon Bridge, located about half way between Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east and Carlisle in the north west on the old Roman road, the Hexham road, known as the A69. It’s close proximity to Hadrian’s Wall and Barcombe Hill provides extensive views of the Border country and is an area of several historic sites including a lime kiln and the Vindalando Roman fort and museum. The area is currently undergoing a major excavation programme, which is open to the public most of the year. Bardom Mill itself has adapted from its former market and is grouped around the railway station whilst the older settlements of Henshaw and Thorngrafton are perched higher on the hillside and feature some old Northumbrian bastle houses, some of which are still occupied. Willemoteswick Bastle now privately owned, was home to Bishop Ridley who was burned at the stake for his religious beliefs in 1555. The Bowes-Lyons family once owned Ridley Hall. Allen Banks, now owned by the National trust, provides woodland walks through what was once often hostile territory.
