Located in north Northumberland near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Spittal is a small seaside resort at the mouth of the river Tweed, a short distance from Berwick-on-Tweed, in a historical part of Northumberland, close to the Scottish border. Spittal boasts one of the finest natural beaches on the spectacular Northumberland coast, part of the area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and overlooks the estuary. On higher ground, there can be some wonderful views of the Holy Island just off the coastline and Bamburgh Castle is just a short distance away. With miles of unspoilt beaches to be explored stretching from Low Newton-by-the-Sea up to Alnmouth and including Druridge Bay and Newbiggin Bay, Spittal is ideally placed for ramblers, walkers, families and all those interested in exploring the historic coastline and venturing inland to the Northumberland National Park. It has become a favourite with many tourists and nature lovers and bird watchers, who return here time and time again. Spittal is prone to flooding, an issue which dates back to the 19th century,.when water from old mine workings flowed into homes and affected drainage and sewage. Disputes over whose responsibility it was delayed work to control the flow until Northumbrian Water and the Coal Authority agreed to share the costs in 2005. An alert system is now in operation
