Sligo is the biggest town in north-west Ireland. A lively port and market town filled with handsome buildings and surrounded by ancient burial sites, Sligo has something for everyone, from art galleries, theatres and shopping centres to cheery pubs with traditional Irish music sessions, tempting restaurants and buzzing nightclubs. The town enjoys a scenic location at the mouth of the River Garavogue between the Atlantic coast and the beautiful Lough Gill, with tall mountain ranges forming a dramatic backdrop. Sligo is a good base for outdoor sports, with walking, riding, golfing, cycling, fishing, boating and watersports all locally available, or for exploring the countryside that inspired WB Yeats, who is buried nearby in Drumcliff. The town proudly upholds the poet's memory, and that of his brother, artist Jack B Yeats, in Sligo County Museum and Sligo Art Gallery, and a statue of WB Yeats stands outside the Ulster Bank. There are no statues yet to honour Sligo's other famous residents, comedian Spike Milligan, film-maker Neil Jordan and boyband Westlife, although one especially moving sculpture commemorating the Great Famine resides on the Garavogue quayside. Several miles away, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest in Western Europe. The historic Sligo Abbey is also worth seeing
