The scenic coastal town of Wicklow is the county capital with something for everyone. Situated on the hillside of Ballyguile, looking out over a broad bay, Wicklow boasts a superb harbour and some wonderful beaches. The Murrough shingle beach, stretching north to Greystones, is popular with shore anglers and bird-watchers, and it's edged by a grassy pathway loved by cyclists and walkers. Just south of Wicklow, the golden Magheramore Beach is a surfer's paradise, and more sandy beaches, such as Silver Strand, line the southern coast road. Wicklow is a historic town, and its heritage walk takes in the old gaol, complete with cells, dungeons and reconstructions, the remains of a 13th Century friary, and the ruins of Black Castle, which command inspiring views over land and sea. The town, with its snug streets, carries an air of past times despite modernisation. It offers a wealth of good restaurants, pubs and shops, while contemporary attractions include the Coral Leisure Centre and tenpin bowling and arcade games at the Diamond Bowl and KidZone. Visitors are welcome at Wicklow and Blainroe golf clubs, and sailing, riding and horse-drawn caravanning are also enjoyed locally. Annual events include a regatta, an arts festival and a gardens festival.
