Nestling on the southern slope of the ByBrook valley and situated within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much of the village of Box is in a Conservation Area. The village grew up along the A4, once famous as the Great West Road but locally named London Road. Despite being a small English village Box has many attractions including the buildings of the village itself. Many of these are made from the natural Box stone which has been quarried in the surrounding area since at least the 8th Century. The area was once part of a large Roman estate and remains of a grand villa with many mosaic floors have been found there. It is also the site of what was once the longest tunnel in the world, Brunel's Box Tunnel is almost two miles long and cost the lives of 100 construction men before it was completed in 1841 as part of the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol. The construction of the tunnel transformed Box as many workers settled there causing something of a population boom. Peter Gabriel established his state of the art 'Real World Studios' there and this has helped attract people from the entertainment industry to settle in Box.
