Bradford-on-Avon is a small and picturesque town nestling, as the name suggests, on the River Avon not far from Bath. Settled in the iron age there has been a community here ever since with many periods leaving their mark. Notable buildings include the saxon church dating from the 9th century and the Norman church of Holy Trinity. The normans also built the famous bridge across the ford which is a fine example and very photgenic and there are also remains of a roman villa and road. Bradford-on-Avon thrived during the middle ages as a centre of the wool trade and there are many large mill buildings still lining the river today. This is a bustling and attractive town which, although well placed for the delights of Bath and the west country, is well worth visiting in its own right.
