Evidence of human activity dates back to at least 3,500 years ago in Trowbridge. It is thought that the Saxons were responsible for naming the town, after a tree bridge near the early settlement. Trowbridge flourished and was already occupied during Roman times and there's evidence of a substantial timber manor house standing there in the Saxon era. At the time of the Domesday Book it is believed that around 200 people were living in what was then called Straburg. It was the trade in cloth that took Trowbridge from village to town and by the 1500s it was a very desirable manor, full of wealth. By 1821 the town was still weaving cloth and the population had grown to almost 10,000 as workers came in from the surrounding countryside. Machines replaced hand-looms and the canals came to Trowbridge. Only a decline in the wool trade in the west of England stopped the town from growing into a major industrial powerhouse to rival those in the north. The town centre is mainly Georgian and Victorian in appearance with the usual modern additions. The Trowbridge Museum is housed in what was formerly the town's last working woolen mill, Salters Mill.
