The amalgamation of the three villages of Burnham Ulph, Burnham Sutton, and Burnham Westgate, the genteel Burnham Market is the archetypal modern North Norfolk resort. Here the past, full of echoes of local boy Horatio Nelson, mingles with the present, a thriving and rather gentrified home-from-home for those escaping the teeming metropolis, even if only for the weekend. Because of the influx of well-heeled Londoners the village has the nickname of Chelsea-by-the-Sea, at once a gripe and a compliment. A gripe because change is perhaps regretted, and a compliment because the new blood has brought with it prosperity and vitality in the form of a booming local retail economy. As well as the more usual post office, butcher’s, chemist’s and so on, there are over 30 outlets in the village that make it a shopping destination. Books, deli-foods, fashion, interiors, antiques, Burnham Market is full of independent and interesting shops. The village is centred on a large green, with some striking Queen Anne and Georgian buildings surrounding it, plus traditional napped flint Norfolk walls. As well as the shopping opportunities Burnham Market has no shortage of eateries, including the historic Hoste Inn, a 17th century coaching house where Nelson took a glass when collecting his post during a sojourn here on half-pay in a lull in the Napoleonic wars. And the food is not the only draw to the restaurants and pubs – celebrity spotting is on the cards too. The past and the present work together well in Burnham, and they come together particularly harmoniously during the annual summer festival, with professional musicians entertaining residents old and new in various venues such as the lovely church of Burnham Westgate at the western edge of the village.
