The little village of Lenwade sits in the lovely Wensum Valley, just a twenty minute drive northwest along the A1067 from Norwich. While the beautiful city of Norwich naturally has many attractions for those using Lenwade as a base, the village has plenty to offer in its own right. Right on the doorstep there are two family friendly places that provide great days out. The Animal Ark and Country Park is a 20 acre site with more than 300 domestic and farm animals including rare breeds, many of which can be fed and even cuddled. A mile or so to the east there is The Dinosaur Adventure Park, a brilliant award winning place that will keep pre-teen kids in particular amused for many hours, and has a lot for parents to enjoy into the bargain. Rather more sedate pleasures are to be had in the village too, with two buildings standing out as worth a look-see. Firstly there is the late Victorian Lenwade Mill, now converted into several luxury homes, but still a great example of good solid Victorian architecture, in a pretty setting by the Wensum. And second, another piece of Victoriana destined by social changes to be used for a different purpose, St Faith’s Church in the centre of the village, a small Victorian Mission church that is a nice example of simple but characterful design. Though the church has fallen into disuse, the village otherwise is thriving, with several shops including a post office, plus a pub and an up-scale country house hotel, and to provide a nice balance it even has its own chippie still. The Wensum is a sizeable river at this point, crossed by the A1067 near the mill, and the countryside around the village has some real beauty spots to find and explore. And if the lure of the countryside palls, Norwich, one of the country’s best preserved cities, is just eight or nine miles away.
