The quiet Broads village of Rollesby, about seven miles north west of Great Yarmouth, sits on the A149 road that meanders between that latter town and Cromer. Rollesby Broad is one of the so-called Trinity Broads, along with Filby and Ormesby. Not connected to the rest of the system the three merge into one considerable expanse of water. Because they are cut-off from the rest of the system you will not find floating gin palaces here, but rowing boats and some sailing craft, making this a haven of peace for those wanting an idea of how the Broads were a hundred years ago, although electric outboards can be used. Because of the tranquillity of the waters fishing is good in Rollesby Broad, and it is a good destination for those after fine specimen pike. The village skyline is dominated by St George’s church, largely 14th century, although the tower, round in typical Norfolk style, may be 13th century. The church is remarkable for far more modern elements, however, containing a major collection of Victorian stained glass assembled by Richard Tacon, rector here from 1872 until well after the First World War. The living was a rich one with an imposing rectory in the village, and Tacon used his substantial earnings to compile the collection.
