Winterton-on-sea is an ancient coastal village situated in the eastern reaches of Norfolk, home to nearly fifteen hundred people. There is a strong link with fishing and agriculture which has played an important role in centuries past, and an attractive church which is dedicated to All Saints whose impressive tower rises to 132 feet and punctuates the skyline, inside reveals a poignant memorial to souls lost at sea, including the tale of a thousand lives lost when a fleet of 200 ships floundered in a turbulent storm in 1692. Picturesque cottages and houses are spread throughout the village which has a pleasing village green, unusual round thatched holiday homes, and a welcoming three hundred year old Inn which completes the picture. To the western edge of the village the Wind Farm catches the eye in the nearby village of Somerton. The magnificent wide expanse of golden sandy beach is unspoilt and offers pleasing walks and swimming, and there is also a colony of seals just north of the village guaranteed to tempt nature lovers outside. The sand dunes that stretch for miles will keep bird lovers happy at Winterton Dunes Nature Reserve where an interesting labyrinth of footpaths uncover unforgettable wildlife.
