Brent Cross shopping centre, with more than 100 big-name stores and cafés, is one of the most popular retail venues in London, catering for millions of customers. Indeed, it was the first of its kind, the only major, enclosed mall in the UK when it opened in 1976. Brent Cross introduced a raft of new ideas to make shopping easier, things that are taken for granted now but were unheard of back in the Seventies. Serving until 8pm on weeknights, for instance, was an exciting new measure which predicted a trend towards flexibility rather than the often inconvenient rigidity of nine-to-five opening hours. Situated on the North Circular Road between the southern end of the M1 and the Brent Cross Flyover, the centre is easily accessible by car and public transport. Over the years, it has continued to expand and keep pace with what shoppers want, despite increasing competition from out-of-town mega-malls such as Bluewater in Kent and Lakeside in Essex. Even more improvements are in store for the Brent Cross area and the neighbouring Cricklewood, with a planned regeneration promising new houses, schools and jobs, a leisure centre, delightful parks and open spaces and a wholly "transformed" shopping centre.
