Brockley is a district within the South London Borough of Lewisham, with Nunhead to the west and Ladywell to the east. It was a rural hamlet for most of its history, developing gradually in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Brockley was indeed known for its market gardens, evidence of this in the form of some older fruit trees still to be found. A canal helped the development of Brockley early in the 19th century, soon filled in and replaced by a railway which was instrumental in the evolution of the district: it helped the well-to-do move into and commute from large villas constructed for them, Lilly Langtree one famous resident in the last quarter of that century. As the railways continued to improve these wealthy people moved further out, and the area became more industrial and went down-market, bombing in WWII leaving space for the building of flats that accelerated that process. After WWII Brockley saw much immigration from the Caribbean, those new residents and the artistic and student arrivals drawn by nearby Goldsmiths and the symbolic significance of the Rivoli Ballroom making it a lively and creative place in the 1970s as it to an extent remains. Since the 1990s the draw of solid Victorian housing and green spaces like Hilly Fields, and the easy commute that led to Brockley’s earlier metamorphosis has sparked the gentrification of some of the area, with the consequent flowering of new cafes, bars and delis.
