Earls Court is an inner-city district of west London, between Kensington and Fulham. It has formerly been known as a centre for gay culture and also for visitors from the Antipodes, but its most famous attraction has long been the Earls Court Exhibition Hall. It's situated on what was once a wasteland stretching between the local railway lines. In 1887, a showground opened there, presenting entertainments, exhibitions and fairground amusements. The next owners stayed with the concept: the great Hall opened in 1937 with a chocolate and confectionary display, and has since hosted countless exhibitions, ceremonies and events including concerts by some of the biggest pop and rock acts in the world. It increased its capacity with the opening of Earls Court Two in 1991 by Diana, Princess of Wales. The Earls Court venues operate in partnership with the older Olympia, which is owned by the same company. For many years, the Earls Court area existed as a poor relation to its more upmarket neighbours, but its east side has recently undergone huge improvements and house price rises. With its green squares, impressive Victorian architecture and proximity to numerous tourist attractions, Earls Court is an ideal base for visitors.
