Heathrow passengers looking for a base close to the airport are ideally served by Harlington. Formerly an ancient farming settlement in Middlesex, the village now exists within the London Borough of Hillingdon. It's situated on the northern outskirts of the airport in the area caught between the M4 and the A4. Unsurprisingly, Harlington is at the centre of local opposition to the proposed expansion of Heathrow. Travellers with time on their hands may wish to explore the wider neighbourhood. Despite its proximity to the world's busiest airport, the area - part of the Thames Valley - has green spaces and choice walks promoted by the local council. The Harlington Doorstep Walk takes in the Green, the Paddock, West End Lane sports fields and the high street. Nearby are Cranford Park and Minet Country Park, a newly established 90-acre nature reserve co-run by A Rocha, an international Christian environmentalist organisation. Other attractions within six miles include Osterley Park with its Robert Adam-designed neo-Classical villa, Boston Manor House - a lovely Jacobean mansion in Brentford, and Thorpe Park, offering rides and roller coasters galore for all the family. The splendid sights of Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace are each seven miles away.
