Harmondsworth is a picturesque village beside the northern perimeter of Heathrow Airport. At its centre is a village green, overlooked by the 17th Century Five Bells pub and the lovely St Mary's Church, a Grade II-listed building that in part dates back to the 12th Century. Another of the village's historic attractions is its 14th Century tithe barn, one of the largest and finest timber-framed barns in the country with a spectacular oak-beam roof. However, plans for a third runway at Heathrow spell trouble for Harmondsworth. According to English Heritage, the church would be lost, the barn would have to be moved and reassembled somewhere else, and a quarter of the village's Conservation Area would be destroyed. There are also threats to the neighbouring villages of Cranford Cross, Harlington, Longford and Sipson, and local and national groups are fighting the proposals. Harmondsworth has also been at the centre of protests involving its detention centre, one of two local centres holding asylum seekers and refugees. The most recent addition to the village is British Airways' award-winning Waterside building. Set on a lake, it incorporates a shopping and entertainment centre and the specially created Harmondsworth Moor, a park and nature reserve.
