Only a few miles north of Heathrow Airport, Hayes is located in the outer reaches of west London. It's a residential town, well supplied with hotels and guest houses for travellers staying near the airport. Literary types may be interested in the Fountain House Hotel since it was once a boys' high school where George Orwell taught. The name Hayes comes from an Anglo Saxon word meaning "brushwood". Indeed, the town originated from a group of five rural villages that existed peacefully until industrialisation arrived, aided by the Grand Union Canal in 1794 and the Great Western Railway (1864). In the 1900s, the residential parts of Hayes began to grow as more and more homes were built for people taking jobs with incoming giants such as Fairey Aviation, Nestlé and the company that later became EMI. These days, Hayes is more involved in service industries than manufacturing, and the biggest local employer is the airport. The area has a sports centre and a swimming complex with a health suite and gym. Beck Theatre presents shows, films and youth productions, and the community comes together for the annual carnival in July. Visitors have easy links to the M25, M4 and M40.
