Herne Hill has quietly become one of London's most desirable areas. Families value the safety and attractiveness of its residential streets, the green spaces, the play facilities, the schools and colleges, and the Victorian and Edwardian housing that's still just about affordable, despite its proximity to the more expensive Dulwich. At the same time, Herne Hill borders on the rumbustious nightlife of another neighbour, Brixton, with whom it shares Brockwell Park. An extremely popular summer destination, the park boasts a refurbished open-air lido and an 1813 country house. Herne Hill takes something from all of its surroundings: it's scenic and tranquil in some places and coolly contemporary in others, with traditional pubs and restaurants prospering happily alongside chic bars, coffee houses, independent shops and boutiques, and galleries. The Escape Bar And Art is an extraordinary venue, functioning during the day as a café and art gallery and, by night, as a bar and club. Herne Hill also offers unique cycle racing at a vintage velodrome built in 1891, and it's famous too for a long-established boxing gym at the Grade II-listed Half Moon pub - an esteemed live music venue. As an added benefit, central London is within easy reach.
