The residential district of Hillingdon also gives its name to the capital's most lightly populated borough. Situated at London's western extreme, the borough contains 239 parks and open spaces, many of which lie within the green belt. This means that the visitor is as close to countryside and scenic villages as to Heathrow Airport or to central London, only half an hour away by road or tube. The suburb of Hillingdon enjoys the wide open acres of Hillingdon Court Park, which also includes pockets of wetland and woodland. The town began as a parent village to Uxbridge. Over time, with coaches stopping en route between London and Oxford, Uxbridge assumed the greater importance. Today, Hillingdon remains a quieter place than its neighbour, and this suits many visitors very well. There are some historic buildings to be enjoyed here. The charming Red Lion hotel, restaurant and pub - said to have served no less a figure than Charles I in 1646 - looks out over Hillingdon Hill, topped by the ancient church of St John the Baptist. The oldest part of the church, its chancel arch, dates back to around 1270. Comedian John Rich, who invented English pantomime, is buried here.
