Kensal Rise, a modest district in north-west London, is experiencing rising fortunes, along with its neighbour Kensal Green. The two areas are so closely related they're often referred to as one, and the dividing line remains unclear. Kensal Rise is a multicultural neighbourhood with a history of Irish and Afro-Caribbean settlement. Until the 1990s, it was associated with deprivation and crime. Now it's welcoming an influx of young professionals and families to its still-affordable, renovated Victorian housing. The benefits are clear: Kensal Rise is twenty minutes from central London by train; furthermore, it verges on Notting Hill to the south and the increasingly expensive Queen's Park to the east. As a result, the arterial Chamberlayne Road has opened various upmarket stores, boutiques and bars. Only a little further afield lies a world of varied cuisine. Wembley is famed for authentic Indian restaurants, Harlesden is the place to go for superb West Indian food and Kilburn offers several acclaimed gastro pubs. The beautiful Kensal Green Cemetery is an attraction in its own right. London's oldest graveyard, it's set in 77 acres of land - much of cultivated for nature and wildlife conservation - with some fascinating tombstones, mausoleums and catacombs.
